Port80 Surveys HTTP Cache Control on the Top 1000 Corporations' Web Sites Since 2003, Port80 Software has surveyed the sites of Fortune 1000 companies to discover their use of cache control. Through the elimination of unnecessary requests for repeat Web visitors, proper cache control is one of the most effective, inexpensive ways to accelerate a Web site or application. Web pages are served more quickly out of the user's browser cache whenever possible, while both the server and the network are freed from the burden of handling unnecessary validation requests. July 2007 brings the third installment of our Top 1000 Cache Control Survey. Port80 downloaded each site's home page with supporting files and analyzed the response headers to determine which of the pages' objects are, in principle, cacheable (essentially, all external resources which are not markup) and what percentage of those cacheable objects include explicit expiration-based cache control headers. |
